Epi
Island
Peace and Beauty
in the South Pacific
Are you looking for a peaceful
getaway from Port Vila or a great place for a relaxing vacation in
Vanuatu? Epi Island offers you exactly what you want. This quiet,
lush garden island is the perfect place for families, hikers and
backpackers to enjoy themselves. You'll also find wonderful beaches
(many white sand and at least 2 black sand beaches) all around the
island. Traveling to Epi is simple, especially from Port
Vila.
What to Do?
There are many things to do on
Epi. You'll find that this paradise island offers numerous ways to
enjoy the vast beauty of nature, as well as surfing and much more.
Lamen Bay is a great place for a swim; you'll find dugongs (a
relative of the manatee) in the Bay, grazing on sea-grass and
sunning themselves in the warm waters. Lamen Bay is also the best
place to catch the sunset.
If surfing is your thing,
you'll find the best waves in northeastern Epi and snorkeling is
available throughout the island, though Nikaura's Marine Protected
Area is one of the prime locations to enjoy the ocean. You can also
find a number of walking tours around the island, or simply explore
on your own. The island has several roads, but there are relatively
few vehicles, so renting a car or taking a taxi is largely out of
the question.
Where to Stay?
The Epi Island Guesthouse
features upscale accommodations on a limited basis. 13 acres of
tropical grounds, a private beach and homemade meals are also part
of this location. You'll find some other areas on the island, as
well.
Epi Paradise Sunset Bungalows
on Lamen Bay offers camping, as well as single, double and group
accommodations. Tours of the island are available from this
location, as well as boating, snorkeling and more.
Nikaura Sunrise Bungalows is
another laidback establishment, featuring a single bungalow and
access to the ocean. The Marine Protected Area, an underwater
volcano and other attractions are located nearby.
Getting Around
The primary means of transport
on the island is by foot. Bicycle rentals are limited, as are cars
and trucks. The island boasts 2 small airports, both of which are
serviced once or twice each week by Air Vanuatu. You'll find that
this makes it perfect to spend a few days on the island and then
head back to Port Vila, where you will find more holiday attractions.
