Volcanic island - home of two volcanoes
Aneityum Island is inhabited island, located at the southernmost end of the Vanuatu islands archipelago. The island features rich volcanic soils and a more temperate climate, which has encouraged the growth of the sandalwood trees.
The island is also known under names of Anatom or Keamu. Aneityum island basically consists of two volcanoes, which are no longer active. The volcanoes and their surrounding mountainous landscape basically form the island. On the northwest side of the island is Inrerow Atamwan volcano, while southeast side is home to Nanawarez volcano.

Aneityum island has been formed on two sleeping
volcanoes, whose rich soils proved ideal for the growth of sandalwood, later ravaged by sandalwood traders. |
Sandalwood is prized in the Orient for its aroma, and in the previous century, this little island was ravaged by sandalwood traders. The island was also the first center of the Presbyterian Church and the remains of the once largest missionary church in the Southern Hemisphere still stands on the island today. It was builty by Reverand John Geddie and was designed to seat 1,000 people. Approximately 3,500 people, or two thirds of the island's population, was converted to Presbyterian by Geddie.
Today, the island has few buildings and no cars. However, it is surrounded by live coral reefs which attract many for its excellent snorkeling. You'll also enjoy the white sandy beaches, which just adds to the island's charm. The island is easily accessed by the airport on a smaller nearby island called Inyeug Island. Vanair services fly to the island twice a week from Port Vila and Tanna.

The largest village and the main settlement on Aneityum is Anelgauhat, located on the souther part of the island. Some limited supplies are available from the village shop. But it's best to bring your own food and drinks, as much as your can.
You will also find a small "restaurant" on the island, at Williams Guesthouse, where you can get fresh fish and local fruits and vegetables. If for any reason you need to call them, they can be reached via regular telephone land line +(678) 68899.
