Page: Emae Island - Enjoy Peace and Quiet on Shepherds Islands |
Picture perfect paradise with beaches and clear waters
Apart from the occasional cruising yacht or diving cruiser, Emae Island - situated in the middle of the Shepherds Islands in Vanuatu - is seldom visited by travelers. It is one of the largest islands in the group. The other large island is Tongoa.
Although the island isn't often visited by travellers, this could change when the new eco-tourism project comes to fruition. This project could bring more visitors to the island, especially those that are looking for a picture-perfect paradise with long strips of beaches and crystal clear waters.
Emae Island is only 11.3 kilometers long and 3.5 kilometers wide, and whilst it's far from the most popular island in Vanuatu, it has a unique charm. The people here are friendly and warm, and the island is close to a popular diving site called Cook Reef. There's also a nerby anchorage for small boats.

For those who like to get away from it all, to enjoy peace and quiet in the
nature, Emae island makes the perfect holiday destination. |
Just 20 minutes by plane from Port Vila, Emae is the ultimate destination if you are looking for some peace and quiet. In fact, the island way of life lives up to the popular Vanuatu saying: "The Timeless Vanuatu Islands". If you enjoy walking and hiking, this is an ideal place for it.
Your trip from Port Vila to Shepherds islands could be combined with a visit to Epi island, too. This will make the most of your travel from Vanuatu's capital.
![]() There's not much economic activity on Emae island, but fishing is good. |
Getting around the island is probably easier than you think; the bush roads aren't too bad here, and vehicles are able to drive across Emae most of the time unless there has been heavy rain. A chartered truck will take you across the island for a small fee, allowing you to explore this Oceanic treasure.
There are no eateries on Emae and you are limited when it comes to accommodation, but you will find that the locals are always willing to tell you a few stories about this charming island.
In Marae Village, you can find Annie's Homestay, Emae Sunset Bungalows, and Takelomai Homestay. Although these accommodation options are basic, they provide the perfect place to lay your head after a busy day exploring the island. Other options include Wahe Guesthouse in Siwo Village and Freshwind Guesthouse in Tongamea Village.
