Erromango Island

Sandalwood island - an adventurer's dream come true

Are you looking for a great way to view some of the most exotic real estate in the South Pacific? Erromango Island offers visitors a number of walking and hiking trails, as well as caves to be explored and much more. This island is an adventurer's dream come true. With limited holiday accommodation available, few roads and no nightlife, you will have a peaceful, enjoyable time on the island.

Erromango Island was once the home of large sandalwood forests. The explorer Peter Dillon made the island famous for its stands of this aromatic wood and also opened the gates to abuse and deforestation. The island has also suffered from the hands of slavers, and continues to undergo deforestation at the hands of unscrupulous logging companies.

Erromango island was once known for its sandalwood forests, leading to its deforestation, against which the islanders are fighting.

However, the island is fighting back with the help of outside nations and the creation of numerous parks and reserves is underway. The islanders, themselves, have also begun to fight back against the logging companies, ensuring that their livelihoods and the beauty of the island remain undamaged.

What's to See on the Island?

You'll find a wide variety of things to explore on the island. You can enjoy the sight of the few remaining sandalwood trees, as well as explore virgin kauri forests. In addition, you can grab a guide and head across to Suva Beach for some exploration. You'll find caves with ancient cave paintings to explore, as well as several ruins in the area.

Backpacking is a great way to explore Erromango island, which has many hiking and walking trails.

In addition, the island is littered with walking and hiking trails. If you enjoy backpacking, this is one of the best places for it. You can walk across the island from Dillon's Bay to Port Narvin, or head up the coast to Ipota. The trip down the South River is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the island, as well.

Where to Stay on Erromango?

The island has no resorts or hotels, though bungalows are available. Meteson's House in Dillon Bay offers comfortable accommodations and you'll find similar lodgings in Port Narvin. Camping and exploring are excellent ways to stay on the island, though day trips from other islands are available to help you enjoy your trip.

Getting Around Erromango Island

Getting around the island is accomplished on foot. Few roads exist, though logging roads and trails can be found. Walking is the predominant form of transportation on the island, though you'll find a few islanders with 4x4's (SUV) and speedboats. Boats are the best way to get around the island without walking.
