Vanuatu is an island archipelago in the South Pacific, popular with visitors from the surrounding countries, such as Australia and New Zealand especially, as well as other countries from around the world.

The islands enjoy a slow pace of life with an abundance of sites and places to see and tour. There are various holiday activities available on the main islands, most popular of which are Efate, Santo and Tanna islands. Here are some of the top activities and attractions you will find in Vanuatu.

Bird watching

This is one of the best places to spot different birds. Tropical birds are exotic, noisy and colourful. Best time to see them is between September and January in the southern islands, when they're breeding.

Birdwatching is one of favourite sightseeing activities for many Vanuatu visitors,
where they can find lots of exotic and colourful birds, such as Toucans.

Diving

There are two locations that you can dive in to, Santo and Efate. They have spectacular views and access is great with, good visibility and reefs, caves and wreck dives as well as swim throughs. One of the best known and most popular diving sites for advanced divers is the WWII wreackage of the ship President Coolidge, located off the Espiritu Santo Island.

Ekasup Cultural Village

This is a village near Port Vila where you can take a tour, or drop in as part of your round the (Efate) island tour. Your tour organizer will pick you up from your resort in Port Vila, when you book the tour. The village offers a view of the life and culture of the Vanuatu people, their food, dance, medicines, hunting and traditional village living. There are tours twice daily except Sunday and in addition on Friday night they have the Melanesian Feast.

Espiritu Santo Island

Vanuatu largest island offers a lot of diving and snorkelling opportunities. The white beaches are beautiful for swimming in e.g. Champagne Beach and Blue Holes. There are several resorts here as well as its main town Luganville, which offers many interesting spots to see.

Game Fishing

Vanuatu is the place to go deep sea fishing for swordfish, wahoo, marlin and tuna in the South Pacific. Fishing tournaments are held here throughout the year. Boats bring passengers from Port Villa on full day tours or half day ones. You can also opt to go for reef fishing.

Go dolphins spotting

This is a full day cruise from Havannah Harbour on the Coongola. It visits the turtle sanctuary on Moso Island, where you have a barbecue on the beach and can snorkel. Both morning and afternoon tea re provided. When the wind is good, you can sail back using a sail and watch the dolphins as they dive.

Markets

In Port Vila there are two markets on the harbor. There is Mama's market a 24 hour market closed Saturday afternoon until Monday morning. Here you find fruits, flowers and vegetables served by the local women. Local delicacies like lap-lap are served. There is a market for handicrafts selling sarongs, carvings, handicrafts and souvenirs as well as clothing items. You can get your hair braided here too.

Port Vila

Vanuatu's capital is Port Vila, located on Efate Island. This is the place where you first arrive when you visit Vanuatu, via Bauerfield International Airport. Most of Vanuatu attractions and places of interest can be found here, where you can also discover a variety of restaurants, bars, cafes and night clubs.

Most of the tours in Vanuatu start from here. It also offers water sports and other holiday activities for those who like a adventurous holiday. Apart from its colourful markets, Port Vila also has a cultural center, with lots of artefacts from the South Pacific.

Scenic Flights

Vanuatu has seaplanes at Iririki Island Resort in Port Villa that offers flight seeing. There are helicopter at the Nambawan CafĂ© with a harbor platform. Flights are short and scenic and you can ask to be left on a private island for a picnic or eat lunch at an out of town restaurant. You can also go for a real estate inspections and take aerial photos on these flights.

Tanna Island

This popular island is accessed by air from Port Villa. It has an active volcano Mt. Yasur. The volcano is seen right from the rim and excursions can be day long or overnight stays. There are traditional villages, kava and black magic tours, caves, waterfalls and beaches to be seen.

The Secret Garden

It is on Mele and is a fantastic place to visit. It showcases local fauna and flora and recounts the Vanuatu history. These are black birding days, cannibalism customs, missionaries and World War two. You can see thatched huts, pythons, kava, iguanas and pythons. It also has a Melanesian Feast.
