Vanuatu Volcanos

You will find several active volcanoes on Vanuatu islands

Vanuatu is a part of what is called the "Pacific Ring of Fire." This is an area where two of the earth's tectonic plates bump into each other and this has created several live volcanoes over the years. These volcanoes are a unique sightseeing sites and there are amazing stories about their eruptions, including one that split an island in half and blew up an entire island, causing only a few small islands to remain.

Yasur Volcano

Perhaps the most famous and popular volcano is the Yasur Volcano on Tanna Island. This is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world and it is very easy to reach. The volcano is active year round, but it is not typically too active that you can't approach it. Because of this, it has become one very popular tourist attraction.

Being part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, South Pacific islands are known for their volcanoes and volcanic activity.

Ambrym Volcano

The island of Abrym is actually a volcanic island. The Abrym volcano is a shield volcano on the island. It grew slowly into a flattened dome shape and the lava flows built up on top of the next. The volcano is constantly erupting, but mostly just produces a lot of smoke and some ash.

Lopevi Island Volcano

The Lopevi Island volcano has erupted 22 times since 1863, with the most recent eruption in 1982. The villagers have left the island since the eruption and moved to nearby Paama Island or Epi Island. Although the volcano is not very large, it is still an impressive stratovolcano that has risen directly out of the ocean.

Kuwae Volcano

The underwater Kuwae Volcano is constantly monitored, as it is considered to be a very active and potentially dangerous volcano. However, the area around it is a popular scuba diving site. The Tongoa Wall is located off the south western side of the Caldera. The vents of the volcano create an upwelling of warmth in the water and have created a sort of underwater "Garden of Eden."

Some of volcanoes on Vanuatu islands are active and bellow out ash and fire, creating great night time scenery.

Bali Hai Volcano

The Ambae, or Bali Hai, volcano is a pyramid shape island. Due to its location, the island can be seen from Espiritu Santo, but will mysteriously disappear from view as the sun rises higher in the sky and the sea haze creates a glare that blocks your view of the island. The pyramid shocked the residents of Vanuatu when it awoke in 1991, after 400 years of inactivity. Currently, this volcano is considered to be the most dangerous of the Vanuatu volcanoes.

Mount Gharat Volcano

Gaua Island, or Santa Maria Island, is located off the Banks and Torres group in the northern part of Vanuatu. Guau itself is a volcanic island that rises about 9,800 feet from the sea floor. Steaming Hill Lake is a crater lake that is located just below Mt. Gharat, which is a secondary cone and the summit of a stratovolcano. Mount Gharat has had at least 13 eruptions since 1963. The most recent eruption occurred in 1982 and lasted less than a day. However, one of the most historic eruptions was from 1973 to 1974, which lasted several months. The volcano does emit gases that have been determined to be poisonous and the volcano is considered dangerous to approach.
