Top 5 Reasons to Visit Vanuatu

Where to find most interesting Vanuatu events

Vanuatu is home to tropical islands, secluded swimming spots, pristine beaches, and active volcanoes. This island paradise also boasts of some of the most exciting and interesting events that help in sweetening the deal for you during your holiday. Hence, if you are looking for an intriguing holiday destination, the following are top 5 reasons why you should visit Vanuatu in 2018.

Music Festivals: Zion Fest, Fest Nalenga and Fest Napuan

The Fest Napuan is arguably the biggest annual music event in Vanuatu and one of the Pacific Islands' most important cultural events. This event along with the Fest Zion and Fest Nalenga combine every year to make a musical event that lasts for one week and features the best music across the world. These three events attract various kinds of music lovers because each of them has a distinct flavor.

String bands are very popular in Vanuatu, often playing at different celebrations,
including Fest Nalenga which features string band music.

Fest Napuan features the best of all the contemporary and popular music from the region that includes top acts from New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. It is the highlight of the musical event that lasts for one week because nearly 30 musical acts appear each year. Fest Nalenga mostly features the String Band Music of Vanuatu and its focus is on the Vanuatu sound. Zion Fest on the other hand celebrates religious and gospel music. All of these music festivals usually take place in October.

Land Diving on Pentecost Island

According to CNN, Pentecost Island is home to one of the world's most bizarre traditions: land diving or the nagol or naghol. This ritual requires local boys and men who are as young as 7 years old to attach a vine to their legs and jump from a manmade tower that is 20 to 30 meters high. The locals use materials from the forest to build the tower for a period of five weeks. The jumpers are aware that only 10 centimeters can make the difference between death and life.

It is believed that this land diving ceremony was inspiration for AJ Hackett Bungy, adrenalin activity craze, also known as bungee jumping.

Culture: Port Sandwich Culture and Art Festival

Art is another prominent feature in Vanuatu, where you will find wall murals,
in amongst other, more traditional art

This gives the Community of Lamap a chance to not only celebrate their culture but to share it with people from outside during a festival that takes two days.

Tourists pay a fee of 4,000 VT for every person in order to get a chance to access cultural events like String band, the Pig Exchange Ceremony, Rope Drawings, Sand Drawing, and Traditional Dance Display.

You can pay an extra 1,000 VT in order to stay in the village for the night if you want a more personal cultural experience.

Diving at the SS President Coolidge

The wondrous SS President Coolidge ship wreck is a renowned dive spot that is off the Espiritu Santo island port. A mine sunk this World War II vessel on October 26 in the year 1942 while a Japanese submarine was pursuing it.

Divers from across the world come to this dive site so that they can marvel at the different antiquities found on this sunken vessel. Paintings, guns, Jeeps, cannons and other WWII artifacts are just some of the things that divers can see while exploring this underwater wreckage near Santo Island. Come to Vanuatu and explore this popular diving attraction.

Nature: Mount Yasur (Throughout the year)

You should visit Tanna Island's Mount Yasur, which is the world's most accessible active volcano, so that you can see first-hand the potent power of Mother Nature. The volcano is one of the island's most popular destinations because of its regular eruptions for the last 800 years.

The attractions, events and top destinations make Vanuatu a perfect holiday destination for you and your family. You should therefore pack your bags and head there for Christmas, or the New Year celebrations. Either way, you will have a memorable holiday experience, be it for the upcoming holidays, or at any time you are planning a tropical holiday.
